Ever wondered how commercial health and fitness centers can collaborate with schools to overcome time, staffing, and curriculum barriers?
Dr. Amy Bantham, a member of her district wellness committee, shares her experience.
She began her journey out of concern for her children's lack of physical activity. She questioned, ""How can we change this?""
She was met with resistance when the school claimed it was too cold to let the kids outside at 50 degrees. In Boston, 50 degrees is practically a heatwave, so she pushed for change.
Working with the district wellness committee, they altered the policies and introduced a weather band, ensuring more outdoor time for the students.
However, implementation proved to be a challenge.
Dr. Bantham attempted to bridge the gap between the school system and commercial health and fitness centers. Her goal? To utilize their staffing and expertise for more afterschool programming.
It's a testament to the power of community collaboration in promoting health and wellness among our youth.
