In 2018, Chris Craytor joined the IHRSA board, which was mainly known for hosting trade shows at that time. Most of IHRSA's income came from these shows.
Now, as the newly renamed Health and Fitness Association, Craytor feels the organization is heading in the right direction with it's new-found emphasis on policy.
Compared to bigger trade groups with larger budgets, IHRSA (at least back then) wasn't making as much of an impact. Many in the industry don’t fully understand the importance of advocacy and staying active with local lawmakers.
By 2020, the organization struggled with shutdowns and found fundraising for advocacy difficult.
Craytor thinks more club operators are seeing the value in this increased focus in DC. Moving forward, the HFA will work hard to boost its presence in state legislatures.
