When you’re at the top of your game, it’s natural to assume people on your team are operating “just like I am.” They’re not.
It’s your job to recognize those differences and appreciate how people use their particular abilities to influence, communicate, and work.
We all use pictures, sounds, feelings, words, etc to organize ideas. Everyone is a bit different to what degree those all balance out.
Ask questions! People usually tend to want to share experiences and perspectives, but you have to make the effort to get them talking, and be receptive to feedback!
Ask open ended questions: What’s worked for you in the past? - What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced? - What’s your dream job? - What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? - What are your core values?
Learning about your team means learning about yourself as well.
